Family Programs
There are several programs under the Family Futures umbrella. Some of our
programs and services are outlined below.
Services for Individuals and Families
Family Development Work
An outreach service that provides parent education and teaches parenting skill
to families. This service focuses on a range of issues including: child
development, roles and responsibilities, behaviour strategies, appropriate
discipline, parental coping, and other effective parenting skills. Referrals
accepted through the Ministry of Children and Family Development for residents
of New Westminster and Burnaby. Funded by the Ministry of Children and Family
Development.
Supervised Access
Supervised visits for families where there are identified child protection or
access issues for a parent or caregiver. Visits occur in a safe and supportive
environment that assists parents and caregivers to interact in positive ways
with their child and develop parenting skills. Service is provided by
fee-for-service or by referral through the Ministry of Children and Family
Development for families living in New Westminster and Burnaby where there are
child protection concerns. Funded by the Ministry of Children and Family
Development.
Family Therapy
Brief, professional therapy to assist families in identifying critical issues
that may interfere with their ability to make creative and effective choices.
Presenting issues may include parental coping, relationship concerns, family
integration, anger management, family dynamics, or historical abuse affecting
parenting. Referrals accepted through the Ministry of Children and Family
Development for residents of New Westminster and Burnaby. Funded by the Ministry
of Children and Family Development.
Links Family Therapy
Brief, professional outreach therapy to assist families in addressing the
complexities of parenting and family interactions when there are mental health
or behavioural issues present or emerging. Presenting issues may include
parental coping, relationship concerns, family integration, family dynamics, or
behavioural concerns. Referrals accepted through Child and Youth Mental Health
for residents of New Westminster and the Tri-Cities.
Prenatal Support Program
Prenatal Support is available to young parents, aged 24 years or younger, during
pregnancy and the first year of the child’s life. This unique program provides
information to expectant parents regarding ways to improve diet and health
during the pregnancy, parenting a new baby, and resources in the community.
Referrals can be made by anyone in the communities of New Westminster, Burnaby,
and the Tri-Cities. Funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada.

Parenting Groups
Parenting Children with Challenging Behaviour
This group is intended for parents of children 5-12 years of age. The group uses
an educational approach to assist parents in understanding: how family dynamics
affect parenting; how to improve parental coping; how to identify and address
problems; how to use effective, positive discipline strategies; and how to
improve communication with your child.
Offered as a 6-week or 8-week group 3 times per year (January, March, and
September)

Multicultural Parenting Group
This group is intended for parents of children 5-12 years of age from a range of
cultural groups. The group uses an educational approach to assist parents with:
keeping important family values; learning about resources and services; dealing
with conflict; using effective, positive discipline strategies; improving
communication.
Offered as an 8-week group once a year (usually April)
Evening group, childcare available.

Family Circle
Explore the rich variety of cultures and experiences of families in your
community in this fun, interactive group for parents/caregivers and children
from birth to 5 years of age. Enjoy stories, songs, and games with other parents
and children. Open to all residents of Burnaby, New Westminster, and the
Tri-Cities. Funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada.
Thursdays 11:00 – 2:00pm at Purpose Society, 40 Begbie Street, New Westminster
Runs as a 12-week group, 3 times per year (January, April, and September)

Aboriginal Family Circle
Explore the rich and valuable heritage of Aboriginal families and communities in
this fun, interactive group for parents/caregivers and children from birth to 5
years of age. Enjoy stories, songs, and games with other parents and children.
Open to residents of Burnaby, New Westminster, and the Tri-Cities. Funded by the
Public Health Agency of Canada.
Fridays 11:30 – 2:00pm at 7445 Edmonds Street in Burnaby
Runs as an 8-week group, 3 times per year (January, April, and September)

Coming Soon
Parent-to-Parent Support Group and Mentoring Program
This group is intended for parents and caregivers of children from birth to 18
years of age who have a child who has been diagnosed with some type of special
need (for example, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Fetal Alcohol
syndrome). The group focuses on how parents can support one another through
difficult times in raising a child with special needs.
Also look for….1-1 Mentoring that will match parents to provide support on an
individual basis.
Starting in April 2006
Available to residents of New Westminster. Funded by the Ministry of Children
and Family Development.
Parenting Children with Special Needs
This group is intended for parents of children from birth to 7 years of age. The
group uses an educational approach to assist parents in understanding: the
child’s diagnoses; parenting and behaviour strategies that will work for your
child; ways to reduce conflict in your home.
Coming in fall 2006
Available to residents of Burnaby. Funded by the Ministry of Children and Family
Development.
