Spring Break 2012

March 19 -23

After last year’s success, we are happy to offer another Conductive Education spring break intensive program. This year we are introducing a new group for the younger ages. Also as we did last year, we are offering an early-bird discount of 5% of the total cost. You can make use of this by submitting the application and a deposit (25% of the total) before Monday, the 20th of February. Both programs will take place at the Purpose Society facility in New Westminster.

In order to participate in any Conductive Education program, the child and the parents have to meet for an initial consultation with the Conductor. This service is FREE and is done in the individuals’ home.

During the consultation it is established if (and from what Conductive program) the child can benefit. Aims for the child in the CE session are also discussed.

Parents and toddler group (age 1-4) - $250 for the week

9am -11.30
In this group we will be working in a very playful and age-appropriate manner. Depending on the needs of each child, we will be exploring different ways of moving around and changing positions (rolling, creeping, crawling, high-kneeling, walking) as well as holding positions like sitting and kneeling. We will be working on developing simple grasp and release as well as towards developing fine motor skills.
We will also explore how to develop more independence when eating and drinking (if appropriate) as well as how to start up and carry through toilet training.

School age group - $450 for the week

12-4pm
We will be working on daily lifeskills with a view of becoming a more independent teenager and adolescent. Each child will have opportunities aplenty for moving in/out of different positions with the least-necessary help. The program also aims to improve motivation, attention, and problem-solving skills through age-appropriate activities and games organized in a way that enables each member to participate actively. The children will attend with a family member or other caregiver in order to enable them to learn to give as much help as is necessary, but as little as possible. This also gives the family member or caregiver the opportunity to explore how to implement a conductive life-style at home.

Summer 2012 Program

We are excited to be able to offer a greater variety of programs. Pricing will depend on attendance of the group.

What is Conductive Education?

Conductive-Education is a system of education for children and adults with a physical and associated disabilities originating from damage to the central nervous system. It is a holistic approach, which means it looks at the whole child and his personality and helps developing not only physical but also social, emotional, personal and cognitive skills. The same way your child cannot be separated in different parts the same way CE works on those skills simultaneously. E.g. we might be working on different speech tasks while sitting unsupported at the table. We might be balancing on one leg (with or without holding onto support) while solving a cognitive question. We might practice standing up and sitting down while going to the bathroom, to have the opportunity one day to do it without help. Conductive Education helps developing each child’s individual skills while using the support of the group to enhance this learning experience.

Who Might Benefit?

You may consider CE for your child if:

• You want your child to learn new skills. Conductive Education looks strictly on what your child can already do, no matter how small that might be in other peoples eyes, and works to build up onto this to teach the next skill in your child’s development. Conductive Education recognizes that it does not matter how severely or mildly the disability affects your child’s life, it can still learn new skills. If it doesn’t it might just need a different way to be taught.

• You want your child to gain truly independence from people and equipment. Conductive Education looks to reduce the level of help systematically. You child will have the opportunity to explore different ways of moving with reduced level of help in every session, while ensuring the child’s safety at all times.

• You wanting learn how to help your child to become more and more independently at home. During the Conductive Education session, you will be taught how to help your child without doing it for your child You will be given ideas how to apply certain skills at home.
• You want your child to be motivated learn more. During the session each task is broken down for each individual so it can be successful while still being challenged. Success breeds success!!!
